Skin cancer is a serious condition, although it can be treated quickly and safely if it is caught early. For that reason, we encourage residents of Denver and Highlands Ranch, CO, to have regular cancer screenings. Alta Vista Dermatology offers cancer screenings to help encourage the early detection and successful treatment of skin cancer.
What is a Cancer Screening?
A cancer screening is a preventative service offered at Alta Vista Dermatology. During these screenings, we examine the skin from head to toe to detect any developing signs of skin cancer. These screenings are used to detect actinic keratosis, melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. With regular cancer screenings, you have a higher chance of detecting skin cancer before it fully develops, and can prevent it in some cases. If cancer or signs of developing cancer are detected, we will then be able to develop a treatment plan to eliminate the cancerous growths.
When Should I Get a Cancer Screening?
Everyone is at risk for skin cancer, regardless of race or skin color. If you are above the age of 40 or spend a significant amount of time in the sun, you may be at an increased risk for developing skin cancer. We recommend that patients receive annual cancer screenings to ensure early detection. If you have a history of skin cancer in your family or are at an increased risk, you may want to have skin cancer screenings as often as every six months. In addition, suspicious moles and other growths can be signs of developing cancer. If you notice any unusual growths or changes in the appearance of moles, you may want to come in for a cancer screening.
How Can I Protect Myself from Skin Cancer?
In more than 90 percent of skin cancer cases each year, the chronic condition was caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Excessive sun exposure can also lead to premature aging, which includes wrinkles, lax skin, and discolored skin. Therefore, it is critical to protect your skin when outdoors. Ultraviolet rays are usually the strongest during midday hours so it is important to go outside early in the morning or in the evening. If you are outside, we recommend wearing sunscreen and carrying a sun umbrella.
